Access From The North PDF Print E-mail

There are six primary access routes from the north.

Using Kirby Dr.- South end under construction

Take the Kirby Dr. exit from US-59. Kirby Dr. is under construction by the City of Houston to add large storm-water sewers and rebuild the street. Currently Segment 1 of that project is underway from Brays Bayou to Dorrington St.

Dorrington St. is one block south of Holcombe Blvd. Access is not affected by construction if you turn east on (1) University Blvd. to reach Rice University and the north end of the Texas Medical Center or (2) Holcombe Blvd. to reach the south end of the Texas Medical Center’s main campus. Kirby Dr., south of Holcombe Blvd., has reduced lanes and should be avoided unless your destination is in the construction area between Holcombe Blvd. and Brays Bayou. Construction project details are available by clicking here.

Using Shephard Dr. and Greenbriar St.

There is a Shephard/Greenbriar exit from US-59. Shephard is a southbound, one-way street providing access to east-west streets. If coming from US-59 turn left on Bissonnet to reach the Museum District; left on Rice Blvd. to reach the north side of Rice University near the Rice University Stadium.

Greenbriar runs parallel to Shephard and is one-way northbound street so it will take you back to US-59 from the streets you turn onto from Shephard. Greenbriar continues south beyond Rice Stadium to Fannin Street just north of Reliant Park. You can turn left at University St. to reach the core of the Texas Medical Center or left at Holcombe Blvd. to reach the south side of the Texas Medical Center.

Using Main St.

There is a Main Street exit from US-59, northbound only. Turn right on Main St. to reach the Museum District, Hermann Park or the Texas Medical Center. Main Street in this area is two-way and does not include the train until it crosses under US-59.

Using Fannin St.

There is a Fannin St. exit from US-59 southbound only. Watch and listen for the train. You will be driving next to the train tracks. Do not turn left across the tracks unless the signs and lights indicate it is OK. Fannin St. will take you to the Museum District, Hermann Park and the Texas Medical Center.

Using San Jacinto St.

San Jacinto St. is a one-way street northbound into midtown and downtown from the Museum District and Hermann Park.

Using Almeda Rd.

Almeda Rd. is a two-way street along the east edge of the South Main area. It provides good access to streets leading into the museums, the Texas Medical Center and Reliant Park. See the four main streets listed in “Access Routes From the East” above. Those streets also cross Almeda Rd.
