SMA's History PDF Print E-mail
The South Main Alliance (SMA) was formed as the South Main Center Association in 1976 as recommended in a landmark study titled “Options for a Unique Texas Place.”

SMA is a non-profit 501-c-3 membership organization formed to protect, enhance and serve the area of Houston where Rice University, Texas Medical Center institutions, the Museum District, Hermann Park and what was then the Astrodome are located.  The organizational framework and purposes have remained the same since 1976.

SMA’s purposes are determined by the great institutions that create the character of the South Main Street area:
  • Promoting these institutions as vital resources to Houston and the region;
  • Advocating for well designed and maintained public infrastructure;
  • Supporting attractive and safe residential areas and retail activities in the surrounding neighborhoods and;
  • Serving as a forum for members to identify common ground and achieve results through collaboration.
